Diamond weight is measured in carats. Each carat is comprised of one hundred points, so if a diamond is called a fifty pointer, it weighs half a carat. This is noramally expressed mathematically in decimal form as follows:
This information is important because many popular styles of diamond ring today are expressed in Total Carat Weight (tcw) or Total Diamond Weight (tdw) due to the presence of multiple diamonds. This value will be equal to the combined weight of all the diamonds present within that piece of jewelry. Whenever possible, determine the carat weight of the central diamond within a grouping.
Of the 4 Cs carat weight is the least important
factor that should be your guide in selecting a stone. While a one - carat or
larger stone is ideal, cut, color and clarity are far more important criteria
in selecting a high quality stone. A small, nearly flawless diamond of superior cut and colorlessness will be much more beautiful than a large stone with an imperfect cut, yellow color and inclusions. Of course, it should go without saying that a large, nearly flawless stone of superior cut and colorlessness will be stunning.
